Our community outreach program is an intensive, hands-on program, working primarily within low-income communities across Long Island, NY. Our community outreach works with pet owners to provide non-judgmental assistance in the forms of education, food and supplies to improve the lives of outdoor chained and/or neglected dogs. By working hand and hand with pet owners we strive to bring positive, lasting change in the lives of families and their dogs.
Unchained New York strongly advocates the spaying and neutering of companion animals. Through our spay and neuter initiative we work to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and help to breakdown the misconceptions and fears that pet owners may have while bringing awareness to crisis of the overpopulation of pets. Furthermore, we work directly with low income families through our community outreach who may lack access to medical care and assist them with the spaying and neutering of their dogs. The initiative in turn, decreases the overpopulation of dogs throughout Long Island.
Unchained New York feels that education is one of the most important aspects in building a more humane world while preventing animal cruelty. We are happy to provide humane education seminars on a variety of topics to schools and other venues.
Rescue and Rehoming
We rescue and rehome dogs from the community outreach program and the various communities we service. Additionally, we work with local shelters throughout Long Island, and the five boroughs to rehome dogs to help prevent further overcrowding or euthanasia.
Unchained New York feels very strongly about our US military veteran population. As a small token of our appreciation, we offer FREE adoptions to all US military veterans who have been honorably discharged (proof of DD214 required). Additionally, UCNY has teamed up with Boots on the Ground NY to offer a free bi-monthly training class to veterans and their dogs. We currently have three different veteran training classes – puppy class, therapy dog preparation class and a reactive dog class. Prior RSVP is a must for the class as we already have a waiting list for our next class session. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in joining this free training class!
Exchange Your Chain
At no cost to Suffolk County residents, we provide heavy duty, light-weight tie outs that are appropriate for size and breed of dog in exchange for every chain received. Tie-outs can hold up 250lbs and provide reprieve from the heavy, cumbersome weight of a chain. Animal advocates have been working to tirelessly to strengthen our laws. And, at UCNY, we have been working with the law makers to make the use of chains illegal in Suffolk County. Unchained New York’s “Exchange Your Chain” initiative will help facilitate a seamless and costless transition to a chain free county. While we do encourage everyone to keep their dogs inside as companion animals, we realize that is not the reality on Long Island currently. This is a small step towards a more humane Suffolk County.
